In 1970 GM lifted their restrictions on engines over 450 cubic inches. This made possible the Chevrolet Chevelle SS 454 option, which came in two versions: the standard LS5 454cid rated at 360hp and the optional LS6 version rated at a gutsy 450hp. Car & Driver magazine tested an LS-6 car which ran the quarter mile in 13.81 seconds at 103.81 mph. That's some very serious "Factory installed" power.
This car was not just about the engine, it was also about the over-the-top style. The Super Sport option package included a domed hood, chrome hood pins, and the distinctive blacked-out grill with SS emblem. With its wide stance, long hood, cowl induction, and optional sport stripe kit (featuring two identical "Band aid" stripes on the hood and rear deck), this was a muscle car other muscle cars envied.
When it cam to uncompromising everyday operation, few supercars could match the Chevelle's nicely balanced combination of handling, braking, ride, comfort, pizzazz, and performance. It remains a classic from an era that was not afraid to celebrate power, speed, and flash.
