| More about this diecast model car... | When Volkswagen began importing the 'Beetle' into the US in the mid '50s, all the other American car companies saw their success, and immediately wanted to jump into that market niche. Although Chevrolet seemed to have copied the 'Beetle' in features, the body style was completely different. Corvair was launched in Year 1961 and it represented several production 'firsts' for Chevrolet including: their first rear air cooled engine, unitized body, and fully independent suspension for each wheelfront and rear. Corvair rapidly became known as the 'poor man's Porsche', and by the time in 1969, when production stopped, 1,786,243 vehicles had been produced. Some say that the Corvair was the most important car ever built, because a few rolled over in accidents, and that caused lawyers to notice an opportunity to sue and make money. When a book was published 'Unsafe at any speed' by Ralph Nader, the press was terrible against Chevrolet, and in 1964, a stabilizer was fitted, due to pressure from the media, which people interpreted as the car had some design flaws. Sales died and in 1969 production ceased, but governmental bodies around the world had been put on alert about car safety, and started writing rules and regulations about car safety. |
